England is the largest constituent country in the United Kingdom. To its west, it shares a land border with Wales and its northern border is shared with Scotland. Aside from its mainland, there are also over 100 smaller islands in England. With a population of 55 million, England is home to 84% of the UK’s total population and 53% of the UK’s land area.

England is principally subdivided into nine regions, as defined by the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS):
