The Cotswolds is a picturesque area in southern England, known for its rolling hills, idyllic countryside and charming small towns. The area is officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire is the largest county in the Cotswolds, covering much of the western part of the region. The county is known for its beautiful countryside, historic towns and cities, and rich cultural heritage. The city of Gloucester is the county town and is home to a range of attractions, including the stunning Gloucester Cathedral and the Gloucester Docks, a popular shopping and dining destination. Other notable towns in Gloucestershire include Cheltenham, which is renowned for its elegant Regency architecture and famous horse racing festival, and Cirencester, a historic market town with a rich Roman heritage.

Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire is the other main county in the Cotswolds, covering the eastern part of the region. The county is best known for its beautiful university city, Oxford, which boasts stunning architecture, world-class museums and galleries, and a vibrant cultural scene. Other notable towns in Oxfordshire include Burford, a charming town with a wealth of historic buildings and independent shops, and Woodstock, which is home to the magnificent Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.

Warwickshire

Warwickshire is the smallest county in the Cotswolds, covering a small part of the north-western edge of the region. The county is best known for its connections to William Shakespeare, with the playwright’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon being a major tourist attraction. Other notable towns in Warwickshire include Warwick, a historic town with a stunning castle, and Leamington Spa, a popular spa town with a range of shops, restaurants, and bars.

Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Herefordshire

In addition to these three counties, there are also parts of Wiltshire, Somerset, Worcestershire, and Herefordshire that fall within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The city of Bath is in north east Somerset almost completely surrounded by the Cotswolds. These areas are known for their stunning landscapes, historic buildings, and rich cultural heritage.
