Northern Ireland is a constituent country in the United Kingdom, variously described as a country, region or province. It is the smallest part of the UK by both population and area. It is also the only part of the UK to have an international land border – with the Republic of Ireland.

Since a local government reorganisation in 2015, Northern Ireland has been divided into eleven local district councils. Historically however, the island of Ireland has been divided into 32 counties, of which six are in present-day Northern Ireland. These are:

  • County Antrim
  • County Armagh
  • County Down
  • County Fermanagh
  • County Londonderry
  • County Tyrone
